Sappi is growing into a profitable and cash-generative diversified woodfibre group – focused on dissolving wood pulp, paper and products in adjacent fields

Our market-leading range of products includes:

  • Dissolving wood pulp (DWP) – Sappi is the world’s leading producer of dissolving wood pulp, used mainly to create viscose staple fibre (VSF) for clothing and textiles, but also used in foodstuffs, household products and pharmaceutical products
  • Printing papers – printed communications remain effective, cost efficient and powerful in delivering messages to and eliciting actions from target audiences
  • Packaging and speciality papers – are playing an increasingly important role in an environmentally conscious world. Speciality grades include: silicone base papers, food grade packaging paper, premium quality packaging papers, paper suitable for thermal printing and tissue products
  • Casting and release papers – are used by suppliers to the fashion, textile, automobile and household industries, and
  • Forestry.
     

Sappi is also investing in various biochemical technologies:

  • Biomaterials and bio-energy – we’re further diversifying our business to derive additional value from wood, by extracting biorefinery products and producing energy from renewable resources, and
  • Nanocellulose – using wood pulp, we are pioneering low cost cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) production with a unique patented process in line with our intention of seeking new growth opportunities in adjacent and new markets.

 

Our intentional evolution strategy encompasses the following five main objectives:

  • Achieve cost advantages – we will work to achieve lower fixed and variable costs, increase efficiencies and invest for cost advantages
  • Rationalise declining businesses – by recognising the decreasing demand for graphic paper, we will manage our capacity to strengthen our leadership position in these markets, realising their strategic importance to the group and maximising their significant cash flow generation
  • Grow through moderate investments – we will make smaller investments in existing areas with strong potential growth, including pulp, speciality grades and packaging papers
  • Generate cash to further strengthen the balance sheet – this will reduce risk and improve our strategic flexibility, and
  • Accelerate growth in adjacent businesses from a strong base – we will look for opportunities for growth in fields close to our current businesses or processes.

 

We have manufacturing operations on three continents and sell our products in more than 150 countries. This geographic spread of our operations allows us to optimise global knowledge of market developments, operational best practices and technological advancements.

Sappi Europe is the leading European producer of coated fine paper. We have seven mills, 14 sales offices and 5,100 employees.

Our roots can be traced back as far as 1854 to the S D Warren Company. Today, we continue the legacy of innovation and quality as a preeminent producer of printing and packaging papers, release paper and dissolving wood pulp.

Sappi Southern Africa operates four mills and has a combined production capacity of 675,000 tons of paper, 520,000 tons of paper pulp and over a million tons of dissolving wood pulp per annum.
